When faced with a group of managers/supervisors who have risen through the ranks often you only have your gut to tell you if they are getting the job done. In this case the job is, motivating, empowering your employees. their job is to get the work done while developing  and motivating your employees. If that is not happening then your turnover will be costing you  more than you can afford on the bottom line. One of my first audit clients summed it up very well. He explained to me that he
was an excellent architect. He was such a good architect, that his firm had put him in charge
of all other architects. The problem was that, although he had seven years of university
training which gave him the background to work as an architect, he had never received the
training he needed to plan, budget, organize, or supervise employees.

His story is common. Many organizations promote people without providing the development
or training they need to be effective managers. If managers do not receive basic training in
managing people, directing and motivating them, organizing workloads, and dealing with
difficult employees, they must exert undue effort to get the results they want with a hit or miss
approach. Some are successful; others are not.
